Leaders tend to rise to the top because they were high performers at their work. They may be skilled in their task management, they may be great at selling projects to others, but they may not have the skills to lead a team or organisation. There is an art to balancing one’s own aspirations and actions with that of the entire team.
We recently published an article about how mindfulness can transform leadership. Not only are high performing leaders mindful, but they have mastered the art of balancing their own personal ambitions with that of the team, and this enables them to lead their team or organisation to success.
Leaders must believe in themselves. They are innovative, entrepreneurial and experimental. They are always looking for a better way of doing things. They need to believe in the action they are taking, so others follow suit.
Not only do they take action themselves, but they inspire their teams to take action too. They give their teams the space needed for them to decide on their next steps.
Strategy goal setters
Leaders are 100% focused on their goals, and the goals of their team, unit and organisation. All action is taking to advance and achieve those goals. They have a profound understanding of what is required both at a high level and a more ground-level knowledge of their customers’ needs.
They educate everyone about these goals; they are a constant and consistent talking point. They want everyone to believe in the direction that they are going. They help create micro-goals that act as milestones along the way.
Coaching and development
They are committed to developing their team in every way possible, including coaching their team members so that they are enabling them to be at their best. Leaders tend to ask questions rather than give instructions.
A crucial part of coaching is helping team members become more active problem solvers. Leaders started on a team, too; they know what being on a team feels like, the challenges that may arise and how to motivate the team to work together.
Leadership matters – a lot.
It matters because it sets the tone for the culture, behaviours and beliefs that underpin how well and sustainably an organisation and the people in it perform. We work with our clients to develop their leaders from the ground up by getting them to connect with their story, their beliefs and more of the best of their humanity to enable them to have a more significant impact, create great teams and build a better business.
